Zone 12 PCA: Info for PCA Car Corral at Daytona

Category : News

Welcome to Rolex week! There will be all kinds of fun activities this year – at the track and at the One Daytona entertainment complex right across the street. But of course the big draw for us (in addition to the race!) is the PCA Car Corral, where PCA Members and Porsche owners from all over the world can hang out with old friends and new; see some of the most beautiful street Porsches, all in one place; all while watching the races from trackside at the infield kink or on the monitors inside the tent. And yes, you can help us too, if you have a spare moment (just ask inside the tent how you can pitch in!).

If you plan to be at Rolex, please go to PCA.org to read all about the PCA Car Corral – including the schedule of events and speakers, as well as a link to the track map so you can find us (once on the map page, open the Rolex maps). You don’t have to be parked in the Corral to visit – all PCA members and Porsche owners are welcome! If you’re not going to Rolex, we’ll miss you … but you’ll probably be cozy and comfortable watching the race on TV, as the weather in Daytona later this week will be up and down like usual this time of year. But that’s part of the fun too!

Thanks again to all the Volunteers who will help run the Corral and tent – and who make sure everyone has a great time. We couldn’t do it without you! We’re all Volunteers, and we do our absolute best each year to fit almost 200 Porsches in a limited amount of space. So, when you drive into the Corral, there will be friendly Volunteers guiding you to the proper place to park, with other Volunteers helping to space the cars perfectly so that everyone can fit. Thanks for helping us do our best to have the perfect Corral!

Hope to see you there!

Official friendly reminder:

If you purchased a PCA/Porsche Car Corral Parking Pass, you MUST be driving a Porsche vehicle for entrance. Only Porsche vehicles will be admitted. Even if you have purchased a PCA/Porsche Car Corral pass, you will not be allowed to park in the Car Corral unless you are driving a Porsche. No exceptions.

You are always personally welcome to the PCA Car Corral Hospitality tent with your general admission tickets, you just cannot park in the Car Corral without the PCA/Porsche Car Corral Parking Pass.

Zone 12 PCA: Upcoming Events!

Category : News

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and the new year is starting off right! I enjoyed meeting many of you at a lot of the Region Holiday parties, and a few Regions held some great charity events during the holiday months.

Of course, we’re lucky that our “winter” basically involves having a light jacket in the car, so we have no reason to stay parked in the garage! In 2019 we’ll have a lot of great events all across the Zone, and as usual, our first few months are really active with socials and autocrosses, as well as our annual big events. So, let’s get out there and have fun!

Rolex 24 (January 25-27)

The Rolex 24 at Daytona is coming up next week, and as always, we’ll be hosting the PCA Corral. Thanks to all of you who have already volunteered to help – we appreciate your willingness to be there and we certainly couldn’t do it without you!

If you happen to be going to the Rolex and may have a little time to give back, we can always use more help. Just email me or stop by the PCA tent and ask how you can pitch in – it’ll be fun, and you’ll get to make new friends and meet other Porsche owners from all over the world!

Read more about Rolex here, including the PCA Tent schedule: https://www.pca.org/event/2018-07-24/pca-car-corral-2019-24-hours-daytona

Also, this year there will be all sorts of car-related events at One Daytona – the entertainment complex across from the Speedway.

Porsche Parade Registration – Opens at Noon ET on Monday, Feb 4

Finally – it’s almost time to register! As you probably know, Parade is in Boca, July 21-27. The Parade website is up and running, and it will be updated all the way up to Parade – so check often for updates.

Parade site: http://porscheparade.org/

At noon on Monday, February 4, you’ll go here to register for Parade: http://porscheparade.org/registration.html

After you register, you’ll be able to book your room at the Boca Raton Resort. You can view the room options here: http://porscheparade.org/hotels.html

The other big Parade date to mark is Monday, April 15. This will begin Phase 2 Registration, when you’ll be able to pick the events and banquets you want to attend, as well as Volunteer.

Thanks to everyone who’s reached out about Volunteering at Parade and to those who are helping us with the pre-planning! THE ONLY OFFICIAL WAY TO VOLUNTEER IS DURING THE PHASE 2 REGISTRATION.

During Phase 2, when you register to Volunteer, just pick the specific role you want – such as tour lead or sweep; tour staging; concours; autocross, etc. After you pick the options you’d like to help with, the Parade Volunteer Coordinator will assign you once you’re at Parade. No experience needed – all you need to volunteer is a good attitude and a welcoming smile!

Saturday, February 23: Street Survival @ Sebring

Once again Suncoast Region will be the local host for the national Tire Rack Street Survival (TRSS) school, during the February Sebring DE weekend (Feb 23-24, 2019). As the official TRSS website says, “The primary emphasis of the Tire Rack Street Survival® is a ‘hands-on’ driving experience in real-world situations! It’s about more than driving – it’s about LIVING!”

The school is open to fully licensed drivers only, ages 16-21. If you have a teen who is already driving, he or she can benefit from attending this great driving school.

Also, if you’d like to help out and be an instructor, please contact TRSS coordinator John Sabatini (john.a.sabatini@gmail.com).

July 21-27: Porsche Parade in Boca Raton

(Enough said above … for now!)

Remember to check the Zone 12 Calendar for almost all the Regions’ events: https://zone12.pca.org/calendar/

After reading all this (and then waking up from your nap!), when you have a few minutes read how a couple of our Regions gave back during the holidays. And remember – the various charities that all our Regions support need help all year round.

This year also brings the 25th Anniversary of the Puerto Rico Region as well as the 45th Anniversary of Florida Citrus Region. Happy Anniversary!

Thanks to all Region Leadership and all the Volunteers who keep PCA running. We couldn’t do it without our Volunteers! So please consider helping out in 2019 – every little bit helps! It’s easy to get started: Just ask your Region leadership/a specific Event Chair how you can help. I’m sure they’d be very appreciative – and you’ll have fun, learn a lot and meet lots of new people.

Hope to see you around in 2019!!

Porsche Parade Registration is Just Around the Corner!

Category : News

In case you haven’t heard (yes, shocking – but some people still are not aware!), our 2019 Porsche Parade will be at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, July 21-27. Registration will open soon after the first of the year, so I’m just giving a heads up and some basic information to get us ready to register!

We just had our fall Parade Planning Meeting in Boca, and the final details for Parade events and Volunteer opportunities will be available shortly after the first of the year. I’ve attached the “Registration Guide” for this year’s (2018) Parade in Lake of the Ozarks, just for reference regarding what to expect when you get ready to register for Parade 2019.

Sample Parade Registration Guide (from 2018 Parade)

I’ll be sending more specific information soon, including exactly when online registration will open for Parade (this includes booking your room at the Boca Resort and Club). We’ll all be receiving information along the way from the Parade Committee as well, so make sure you don’t ignore those “enews” emails!

Here’s some basic Parade info:

For now, please ensure you have an account for the member-only portion of pca.org. YOU WILL NEED TO LOG IN AT WWW.PCA.ORG TO REGISTER FOR PARADE.

There are 2 phases for Parade Registration, and everything is done online (there will be no on-site registration once you get to Parade).

  • The first phase (Parade registration and hotel reservation) will open in early 2019 (probably early February)
    • You’ll register for Parade and pay the fee (one fee, for you and a co-entrant)
    • After that, you’ll be able to book your room at the Boca Resort and Club (very attractive reduced room rates; valet will not be required, and there will be a minimal fee for self-parking)
    • That’s it, for the first phase
  • The second phase (banquets and events) will open in early spring (April timeframe)
    • This part takes a bit of time, so just have a cup of coffee ready when you start to register …
    • Register for the various banquets (there are several to choose from; you’ll need to say Yes or No, all the way down the list!)
    • Register for events (Tours, Rallies, AX, Concours, etc.; same here – you’ll run through the list of all of them)
    • When the time comes, sign up to Volunteer! There are dozens of opportunities to help out, and you’ll get to pick your top choices. Hundreds of Volunteers are needed, and the Volunteer Coordinator will assign helpers where needed and keep you informed of where/when/how.

We know we’ll need dedicated Volunteers to be lead and sweep cars for the various Tours. Due to the number of cars in each Tour, we’ll need several leads and sweeps for each one (possibly 4-5 Tours). If you know the S FL area well and/or have been a lead or sweep car in your Region’s Tours, please consider helping out. When Volunteer Registration opens, you’d select that specific role (Tour Lead/Sweep).

I hope you’re looking forward to Parade and all the festivities, and that you’ll be able to help out if you can. It’ll be a special summer for us in Florida, as we welcome the rest of PCA.

Hope to see you at a holiday party or another Region event soon!

Category : News

We just had our very successful and fun OktoberFast Club Race/DE at Daytona, and just around the corner is our next great Club Race/DE – the 48 Hours at Sebring! In Zone 12, we’re very lucky to have these two fantastic PCA Club Racing events, book-ending each year’s race calendar. OktoberFast 2019 will be October 25 – 27, so plan to be there as well.

Thanks to Suncoast and Gold Coast Regions for expertly planning another great 48 Hours at Sebring for 2019. This is the first race of the season, with Club Racers from all over North America. Visit the 48 Hours site for complete details.

Advanced Solo DE registration opens next Monday, December 10, at ClubRegistration.net. If you have any driving requirement-type questions, please contact Amy Riches at fastgt3@gmail.com. Any general questions may be directed to Dennis Wojcik, at sebringclubrace@yahoo.com.

Please plan to come out to watch the exciting races and enjoy the festive weekend. And while you’re there, please Volunteer to help us out:

Also during the 48 weekend, there’s an Autocross on Saturday, February 2 (register at ClubRegistration.net).

Another date to add to your February calendar: the next Tire Rack Street Survival will be held at Sebring on Saturday, February 23. The Tire Rack Street Survival school is a safe teen driving program, designed to go beyond today’s required driver education and give teens the driving tools and hands-on experience they need to become safer, smarter drivers.

Registration is already open, and the class will be limited to 36. Full details about participating, Volunteering or being an Instructor will be available soon.

As we wind down 2018 and start into December, I hope to meet a lot of you at our Regions’ Holiday parties! Sonnenschein Region started it off right with a wonderful event this past Saturday in Alabama, with almost 60 members in attendance (almost half the Region’s primary members!).

Wishing you all a happy start to the holiday season. Please be on the lookout for other fun Zone news before the end of the year.

Happenings Around Zone 12: Hurley Haywood Documentary in Fort Lauderdale / Revs Speaker Series in Naples (mid-Nov)

Category : News

Before we get into the upcoming events, let’s celebrate a wonderfully successful Zone 12 OktoberFast Club Race weekend at Daytona! Thanks to the OktoberFast Committee, led by Chairman Steve Williamson, and all the Volunteers who made it a thoroughly enjoyable weekend of great racing and DE action.

Speaking of racing, tickets are available for the 2019 12 Hours of Sebring / WEC 1,000 Miles of Sebring (see info below).

There will be two interesting motorsport-related events in south FL in mid-November (they’re not PCA events). One is in the Fort Lauderdale area and the other is in Naples.

Hurley Haywood’s documentary – “Hurley” – will be shown at the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival:

·         Thursday, November 15 at 3 pm, at the Cinema Paradiso Hollywood

·         Friday, November 16 at 9 pm, at Savor Cinema Lauderdale

Hurley will be on hand for the showings and will also be selling and signing his book.

For tickets, visit Fort Lauderdale Film Festival and scroll to the bottom, then go to pages 9 and 10 for details.  Or search on ‘Hurley‘.

This is the film that was originally talked about three years ago on Kickstarter and in all the press. It’s produced by Patrick Dempsey and provides an opportunity to learn about Hurley Haywood and his remarkable career on and off the track. It would be great to see the parking areas full of Porsches!

On Friday, November 16, “A Special Evening with David Hobbs and Andrew Marriott” will be held at the Revs Institute in Naples, as part of The Revs Institute Speaker Series.

Revs will host a reception, a conversation and a book signing of “Hobbo: Motor Racer, Motor Mouth” with David Hobbs and co-author Andrew Marriott, who will share anecdotes of “Hobbo’s” fascinating life as a race-car driver, television commentator and reluctant author. Marriott will explain the amusing challenges he faced while attempting to draw out pertinent life and career details from Hobbs in order to complete the book on time.
The event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Revs Institute, 2500 S. Horseshoe Dr., Naples.

Tickets are $75 (cost of book purchase not included). Tickets are limited, non-refundable, and must be purchased in advance or by calling (239) 687-7387.

Mark has been a car enthusiast for over 40 years and has amassed more than 250 cars, ranging from classic 1950s models to 1970s American muscle cars, to practically every color of Ford GT, to modern “sophisticated” muscle like a 2017 Shelby GT350R, and 14+ of the all-time most collectible Porsches.

Make sure you have Parade 2019 on your calendars (July 21-28, Boca Raton)!

Are you a new PCA member? Well, welcome to the Club!! But you might be asking, “What’s all this about a ‘Parade’?” We’re the host Zone next year, and we’re planning to make it a wonderful time for all. If you’d like to volunteer to help with the pre-work, please email your Region President or me. Here’s a little bit of info about the event …

Porsche Parade is the “big” Porsche Club event of the year: our annual national convention. Parade has a potpourri of activities, and club members from all across North America (and elsewhere!) come together for this once-a-year extravaganza to participate in a week of competitive events, to socialize and enjoy their cars, with seminars and tours adding to the event’s variety. For many club members, Parade is their big vacation for the year. It provides them with an opportunity to see new parts of the country as well as to visit with PCA friends that they only see once a year, at Parade!

Zone 12 Fall Instructor Schools/DEs

Category : News

In Zone 12, we’re very lucky to have several active DE programs at various tracks, all throughout the year. A lot of our DE drivers and Instructors support all the DEs, whether it’s their home Region’s or another Region’s event.

But once you’re an advanced solo driver and have a desire to become an Instructor, you don’t have as many chances to attend Instructor School. Are you a solo driver, ready and eager to become a DE Instructor? If so, please plan to attend one of our fall Instructor Schools/DEs.

October: Florida Citrus at Roebling

Friday, October 12: Instructor School at Roebling Road Raceway near Savannah, followed by the weekend DE, October 13-14.

Register now on ClubRegistration.net.

Instructor School: https://clubregistration.net/events/signUp.cfm/event/9192

DE: https://clubregistration.net/events/signUp.cfm/event/9193

Florida Citrus Region has a 20-plus-year history of training DE Instructors for PCA and recently received certification from Motorsport Safety Foundation (MSF) to train Level 2 Instructors. As we know, PCA has long been a leader in training DE Instructors. More recently, MSF developed a national program to provide high-quality, standardized, and consistent training to DE Instructors throughout the country. The Citrus Instructor school combines both programs to grant dual credentials to successful candidates.

November: Suncoast at Sebring

Friday and Saturday, November 16-17: Instructor training, and continuing education for advanced drivers. Open to any solo qualified drivers and current PCA Instructors.

Solo Drivers (new solo and advanced): In addition to a lot of track time, this is a great opportunity for you to join the track walk, receive additional advanced instruction, and learn more about Sebring than can be accomplished in a typical DE weekend. If you’ve been thinking about it, maybe you’re ready to become an Instructor?

Sunday, Nov. 18: Regular DE – open to all PCA member drivers, from novice students to Instructors.

Registration opens on ClubReg on 10/5.

Need more info? Please contact Denise Remus: suncoastderegistrar@gmail.com

Zone 12 Happenings, and … Parade 2019!

Category : News

Hope everyone has enjoyed a fun and eventful summer so far. Of course, our summer will last a bit longer, usually prolonging until the week before Christmas. But “officially” at least, we’ll start moving toward fall soon, and there are many great events to look forward to in Zone 12, all the way into next year.

Speaking of next year … Even though we just had Parade, let’s get ready to focus on Parade 2019! In case you haven’t heard, we’re lucky enough to be the Host Zone for Parade 2019 – with Parade being held right here in Boca Raton (July 21-28, 2019). It will be at the Boca Raton Resort and Club, a Waldorf-Astoria … and the room rates will be very reasonable for this luxurious resort (well under $200/night). Those of us in the Sunshine State don’t usually get these low rates, even as Florida residents. So, plan your 2019 summer vacation to be at Parade in Boca.

This year at Parade, there were 900 registrants (900 Porsches!) and almost 1,800 attendees. It took 40 year-round Volunteers and more than 700 on-site Volunteers to make it happen. Next year, it’s our time to shine!

For 2019, we’ll need 100s of Volunteers as well, from all over the country. The Parade Committee will start planning Tours, Rallies, and all the other events soon, and they’ll be seeking our local expertise and help. So if you’re interested in helping on the front end, please let your Region Leadership know now.

Parade 2019 – July 21-28.  At the Boca Raton Resort and Club.

Parade is our chance to not only win individual event awards, but also be recognized at the National level. At this year’s Parade at Tan-Tar-A Resort, Zone 12 had several individual event winners. But two of our Regions were honored with very special awards.

North Florida Region won the 2018 Public Service Award. This is a National Award, given in recognition of outstanding service to the Region’s community and charities. It was very well-deserved and an especially heartwarming legacy, since the club lost its beloved leader Bob Wilson earlier this year. Bob was a caring, compassionate person and as President, he and his team lead NFL with heart and soul – doing well by doing good. NFL is still recovering from their loss, but they had an excellent example to follow and are flourishing under their new (and continuing) leadership team, which may no doubt result in another National award someday soon.

Puerto Rico Region won the 2017 National Membership Award for Greatest Factored Growth and Membership Retention. Despite a very challenging year, the Puerto Rico Region, led by Jaime Rullan and team have not only helped maintain their club’s bond through all the hardship, but they’ve grown membership in spite of the difficult times. This recognition is the result of a great team effort of their board members who are enthusiastic and committed to the brand and PCA, making great strides in several key areas:

  1. Created a well-balanced event schedule for the year, including Driving Tours, Drivers Education, Concours D’ Elegance as well as social events (dinners, wine tastings, etc.).
  2. Planned events that included all family members, in particular, significant others.
  3. Hired a social media consultant to manage their Facebook page, growing from 400 to 6,000 in less than a year, constantly posting events and photos.
  4. Established a solid alliance with their local Porsche dealer, becoming the Porsche experience enhancer as part of their sales process.

Congratulations to North Florida Region and Puerto Rico Region for their impressive awards and to all the Zone 12 winners in the individual categories and events.

Zone 12 Charity Event at American Muscle Car Museum in Melbourne, FL; Saturday, November 10

Please mark your calendars for the chance to visit the American Muscle Car Museum (AMCM) in Melbourne, on Saturday afternoon, November 10. This is where Space Coast holds their Autocrosses, but you’ll actually get to go inside to see all the amazing cars, displays and classic automobilia. Zone 12 and Space Coast Region will host a charity event at this one-of-a-kind private collection.

AMCM is not open to the public, but they do open on special occasions to host non-profit fundraisers, car activities, and educational tours for school-age children. It’s a 123,000-square-foot complex that houses the personal collection of Mark Pieloch.

Registration will be on ClubRegistration.net, starting in September. Attendance will be limited, and your charity donation will go toward a great cause. The Wabasso School is a special education center serving students ages 5-22. Students are provided specialized instruction, so they can not only achieve academic gains but also increase their social, emotional and behavioral skills. They work to develop communication, daily living, and occupational skills to integrate successfully into the real world.

Complete event details will be available soon, such as lodging options, caravan plans and best travel routes, dining plans and other info. Please plan to take advantage of this great opportunity to visit this wonderful private car museum with some of your PCA friends, while also helping a worthwhile cause.

Visit American Muscle Car Museum for more information.

Hope to see you at a Zone 12 event soon!
