Zone 12 PCA – Fun things on the holiday horizon and into 2020!

Category : News

Before we get to the almost “routine” fun things we’re so fortunate to be able to do, let’s recognize and appreciate our veterans on this special day! Thanks to all who have served and sacrificed – and to all the families who have supported them and sacrificed as well.

We’re just a month away from our first Zone 12 Holiday Parade of Presents! Each Region is having its own day of giving – and giving it its own unique name, whether Parade of Presents, Miles of Smiles or something else festive and fun. You’ll receive specific details soon from your Region leadership with all the details for your Region’s day of giving (either December 14 or 15). We look forward to being able to bring smiles to so many children all around Zone 12 at this special time of year.

Judges are needed for this Saturday’s Porsches by the Bay Concours at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami. If you can help, please contact Peter Olliviere at (954) 816-6005.

  • Mandarin Oriental Hotel, 500 Brickell Key Dr. Miami FL. 33131
  • Saturday 11/16/19, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Roar Before the 24 will be January 3-5, 2020. It’s the final dress rehearsal before the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA, and it’s free with your admission to the Rolex. It’s a great chance to get up close to all the teams and drivers while they’re working out the final kinks in their cars and strategies for the race.

The Rolex 24 is January 23-26, 2020, and we’ll need Volunteers to help us park cars and welcome PCA members every day at the PCA Car Corral. If you’re going to the Rolex and can give back a few hours of time to help us, please let me know. We usually need a few extra people on Friday, since a lot of us can’t take off work that day. If you know you’ll be there on Friday – or any day – please let me know now! As usual, the traditional daily shifts will be managed by the respective Regions, but anyone can work at any time they’re available (not only when their Region is managing).

The week after Rolex will be the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race / DE / AX, January 30 – February 2, 2020. The Committee needs dozens of Volunteers to help, and registration is already open. So please volunteer today if you know you can go: http://48hoursatsebring.com/volunteersignin.php

  • Racer registration opens at 10 p.m. ET on December 2, 2019, on ClubRegistration.net
  • Registration for the Advanced Solo DE will open December 9 at 7 p.m. ET on ClubRegistration.net
  • Autocross registration is open on ClubRegistration.net (no on-site registration). There’s a limit of 75 paid entries (Porsche cars and club members only).

See full details: http://www.48hoursatsebring.com/

Werks Reunion will once again be held during the Amelia Island Concours weekend. Werks will be Friday, March 6, 2020, and registration will open in mid-December.

Guests are welcome to attend 2020 Werks Reunion Amelia Island free of charge (parking fees apply). Porsche owners interested in displaying their vehicles must register (and pay) in one of two categories:

  • Porsche Corral – Display your cherished Porsche proudly alongside others in its model type. Corral participants are not considered in judged competition.
  • Porsche Judged Field – Compete against other owners to take home one of more than 20 great awards

See details: http://www.werksreunion.com/amelia.cfm

SuperSebring 2020 tickets are on sale now and there are still Porscheplatz tickets available! There’s Early Bird pricing on admission tickets until Nov 29: Sebring 2020 early bird admission

And if you want to park your Porsche (only Porsches allowed!) in the Porscheplatz car corral, you can still buy tickets (package includes parking and 1 or 2 admission tickets): Porscheplatz car corral/admission tickets

Just like with Rolex at Daytona, we’ll need a ton of Volunteers to help us run the Porscheplatz at Sebring. If you know you’ll be there, please let me know you can volunteer to have fun with us there too.

This past weekend we had a blast on the Sunrise to Sunset Rally, starting in Melbourne and driving down and across to parts of the state that looked surprisingly nothing like Florida, with fantastic roads to match … winding up with dinner at the beach on Anna Maria Island. Thanks again to the teams in Space Coast and Suncoast for planning and leading this fantastic event, and thanks for the support of Porsche Melbourne and Shay Rowe.

As we enter the holiday season, I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving with family and friends and that you can take time to enjoy all the good things that this time of year can bring. All our Regions are having holiday or after-holiday parties, so try to get to yours so you can share the holidays with your PCA friends.

Hope to see you soon,

Lisa

Zone 12: OktoberFast at Daytona Recap

Category : News

Another great Zone 12 OktoberFast Club Race at Daytona is in the books, and it was a wonderful weekend – weather and all! It’s always fun to have the Daytona International Speedway and all its amenities as our own PCA playground, and we mere mortals again had the privilege to drive the track to raise money for charity. As with all of our events, we couldn’t put it on without our Volunteers.

We’ll start planning for next year’s event soon (OktoberFast is always in late October). So, if you’d like to get involved and participate in the planning and execution, please let me know now. The event only lasts a weekend, but the following year’s planning begins almost as soon as the current event is over.

This was our 13th OktoberFast, and some of the Committee members have been involved from the start. Thanks again to everyone who volunteered this year to make things happen, from registration and tech, to getting the cars on the grid and on track, and everything else in between – we couldn’t do it without you, and we appreciate your time and dedication.

The OktoberFast Committee put in a lot of hours and year-long effort to make this a great event, and last weekend we all enjoyed the camaraderie and fun that IS OktoberFast at Daytona.

Thanks again to the team:

If you’d like to help out next year on the Committee, please let me know now.

As always, thanks for all you do – in big ways and small — to make PCA great!

Zone 12 PCA Happenings – September 9

Category : News

Our Zone 12 Gathering at Parade – it was a grand week, full of wonderful memories!

Thankfully we’ve made it past our first major hurricane of the season and even though the heat of summer will last a bit longer, it’s not too early to focus on the fall. Our next big event is coming up soon at Daytona International Speedway …

Zone 12 OktoberFast at Daytona – October 25-27

Our annual Zone 12 OktoberFast Club Race / Advanced DE / AX is October 25-27. The Club Race starts Friday afternoon and lasts through the Enduro on Sunday; the DE is Sat-Sun; and the Autocross is on Saturday, on the kart track in the middle of the speedway. It’s very cool to watch the race cars go up the banking and around the speedway while you’re enjoying the AX!

If you’re a racer or advanced DE’er, register now and plan to be there on track. And whether you’re an AX expert or have never done an autocross, you’ll love all the competitive fun on the kart track. It’s a great place to try your first AX! Hopefully you’ll plan to come out and participate, or just come out to watch all the exciting racing and experience Daytona in a way that only this special weekend allows – as our own historic playground for our favorite Porsches.

Please consider being an OktoberFast Volunteer if you plan to attend or if you live in the north/central Florida area. It’s a lot of fun to be there and enjoy all the excitement of a Club Race weekend, plus you’ll get a cool Volunteer T-shirt! Email Raylene (Ray) Grynkewich at raygrynk2@outlook.com to become a Volunteer.

Everything is open for registration on ClubReg. Just go to www.ClubRegistration.net and search for “Daytona” to find all 3 events:

Space Coast and Suncoast Regions’ Sunrise to Sunset Rally – November 8-9 (Fri/Sat)

This is one of the most exciting events we have in Zone 12. We start out with a rev-up Blue Skies party at Porsche Melbourne on Friday night, then on Saturday at sunrise we have a beach-front breakfast and take off for a rally across our beautiful peninsula, winding up on the glorious gulf coast to enjoy a spectacular sunset dinner. At Parade, several people from around the country asked me when we were planning Sunrise to Sunset, because it’s such a unique event.

You don’t have to be an experienced rally-er – or even compete in the rally. There will be 3 categories to choose from when you register: Expert (3 or more rallies done); Novice (less than 3 rallies); or Touring (just going for the drive and food!). Registration will be on ClubReg beginning in early October, and the total number of cars will be limited, so plan to register early and get your spot!

SAVE THE DATE: Zone 12 Porsche Parade of Presents to the Children’s Hospitals of Florida – December 14 or 15

Save the date and stay tuned as we finalize details for a statewide charity day to benefit children’s hospitals in all the major areas within the Regions in Florida. In the next month or so, we’ll have registration set up for all the Regions that will be participating (drives on either Saturday, December 14 or Sunday the 15th). We’ll meet up for organized drives in each Region and then set off to visit the hospitals to make a donation and bring a little car joy to the kids as they recover in the hospitals over the holidays. Thanks to President JP Petracco and the Everglades Region for originating the idea and setting the standard with their annual Porsche Parade of Presents to the Golisano Children’s Hospital:

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.712447162488215&type=3

All of our Regions are always having fun socials, drives, Driver’s Eds and Autocrosses each and every month. So, if you’ll be in the vicinity of any of our Region events, plan to participate and have fun with other Zone 12 members.

Here are a few other highlights for the fall (most events requiring registration are listed on ClubRegistration.net.):

  • Sept 14: Sonnenschein Region Autocross (register now on ClubReg)
  • Sept 15: Crown Region sponsors the Ponte Vedra Auto Show
The Auto Show, which is open and free to spectators, will feature up to 180 classic and new collector cars all vying for the show’s 30 trophies. Automobile entrant pre-registration is $35 per vehicle thru September 11th. Day of registration is $50 per vehicle. Visit pvautoshow.com to learn more.
  • Oct 11-13: Citrus Region Instructor Weekend and DE at Roebling Road Raceway (register now on ClubReg)
  • Oct 15: Thoroughbred Region Drive and Dine to Belle Glade Country Club in The Villages (register now on ClubReg)
  • Oct 25-26: North Florida Region Oktoberfest in Apalachicola(learn more: http://nfl.pca.org/upcoming_events.htm)
  • Oct 27: Everglades Region Autocross at Buckingham Airfield (register now on ClubReg)

As always, you can find most of the events from all our Regions on our Zone 12 website calendar (scroll to the bottom to see the calendar): https://zone12.pca.org/

Volunteering

Please – if you have the time, ability and inclination – volunteer in your Region to help out in any way you can. Every effort helps, whether big or small, so please reach out to your Region leadership and ask how you can help keep our Regions growing and having fun! We can’t do any of this without our Volunteers – and hopefully, everyone can give back a little time here and there to keep things rolling along throughout the years.

Thanks to everyone who volunteers – none of our events could go on without you. So, let’s all please keep it going by helping out in our Regions whenever we have time.

Porsche Parade in the Rearview Mirror

Now that a little time has passed and allowed for a breather, I realize just how much fun Parade was! So many members from Zone 12 were there, enjoying time with old friends and making lots of new friends. It’s a shame that many more couldn’t attend this year – anyone who missed Parade missed a great time!

Again, a giant Thanks to all who volunteered to help before and during Parade, especially the gang from Gold Coast who helped with so much of the pre-work for the Tours. Much appreciation to those Volunteers who didn’t even attend events – but you just wanted to be at Parade to help. You all made this a very memorable and successful Parade!!

After being behind the scenes for almost a year and seeing everything that must be done, it’s amazing the amount of work the Parade Committee Volunteers do, all year! And we in Zone 12 certainly enjoyed our opportunity to host and help at this wonderful event, which may not be in Florida for a long time to come. Parade 2020 will be a tad bit farther away, in Palm Springs, CA.

Here’s a final best-of-Parade summary:

  • Total Attendees: ~1,800
  • Volunteers: 650
  • Porsches: 550
  • Cars in the Procession of Porsches: 227
  • Total donations to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital: $19,000

Here’s a good summary of Parade week: https://www.pca.org/news/2019-07-30/porsche-parade-driving-through-week-south-florida

Great pics from the week:  https://porscheparade.zenfolio.com/f387934313

Some of our Regions won big awards and a lot of our members won individually. So, congratulations to all of you!

  • North Florida Region – Public Service Award, for the second year in a row (2nd place this year; 1st place last year). From NFL President Roy Vaughn: “PCA recognized our charitable work in the communities of our Region that included the Robert C. Wilson Memorial Autocross, with the proceeds benefitting the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; the Great Porsche Armada for Second Chance of NW Florida; the WTXL TV Thanksgiving Turkey Drive; our Christmas Toy Drive for Sacred Heart of the Emerald Coast Hospital Children’s and Emergency units; and our Christmas Food Drive for Second Harvest of the Big Bend.  The award also includes a check for $1,000 to continue our charitable events.”
  • Thoroughbred Region – Factored Growth winner (almost doubling their membership in a year!); President Jack Hollrah
  • Suncoast Region – Newsletter Class 5 – 1st place; Porsche Profile, editor Norm Sippel
  • Sonnenschein Region – Website Class 2 winner; http://son.pca.org/, Webmaster Keith Boring
  • Zone 12 – Website 2nd place; https://zone12.pca.org/ , Webmaster Jeff Dorman

All award winners are posted here:  http://porscheparade.org/

And finally, I can’t say it enough – thanks for all you do to keep our Regions strong, fun and engaging! If you see a new member at an event or meeting, please reach out and welcome them to the club. I’m sure you recall when you were new – it can be imposing. But once you get started, we’re all equally a part of this great big Porsche Club family … here to have fun, enjoy our cars and our friendships, and occasionally give back when we can.

Hope to see you at an event soon!

It’s almost time for Parade in Boca! If you’re going, hope to see you at the Welcome party on Sunday! If you haven’t yet registered – or if you have but need to make updates to your events – remember registration closes on June 23.

Parade has lots of fun for kids too, so bring them along and plan to do some of the Parade Kids activities as well.

And for the first time in years, there will be a DE in coordination with Parade (though it’s not part of Parade). Gold Coast Region will have a DE at Palm Beach International Raceway on the Sunday after Parade (July 28).

Weekend in Sanibel/Ft Myers with Gold Coast Region, August 24-25

On Saturday August 24, there will be a Drive & Dine from Davie (leaving from Porsche West Broward), heading over to Sanibel. Visit ClubReg for complete details and to register.

All Regions are welcome to join in the fun for the weekend – just drive over from wherever you are. You need to register at ClubRegistration to let them know you’ll be attending and which restaurants you’ll be going to. Then you’ll make your own reservations for the hotel and the boat ride on Sunday if you want to go on that.

The Sea Racer speed boat tour is on Sunday, August 25 – just call 239-314-5304 or register online at www.SeaRacerfortmyers.com. Use special code “Porsche” to get a $25 rate (seating is limited).

Questions? Contact Rick Veingrad at (954) 472-4010 or smallvideo@bellsouth.net.

The 2019 Sebring 12 Hour race weekend was very special.  It was named Super Sebring with the addition of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) 1000 miles endurance race on Friday to the famed 12 Hours of Sebring on Saturday, with IMSA celebrating its 50th year as professional sports cars premier sanctioning body. The Porsche factory team took top honors in the IMSA WeatherTech GTLM class (Porsche GT Team #911), in the FIA WEC GTE PRO class (Porsche GT Team #91) and with the Patrick Dempsey Racing privateer WEC GTE AM #77.  Both factory Porsche teams won with late race passes that were decisive.  Below you will find a link to a small portion of the 600+ pictures and movies I took on my Canon camera and Pixel XL phone.

We arrived at the 2019 Super Sebring weekend on Thursday with all WeatherTech classes practicing on track.  Next up was the WEC practice session and wandering through both series pits during the Prototype Challenge spec series race.  A WeatherTech evening practice followed at sundown (7:45pm).  Then WEC qualified from 9:30pm to 10:30pm that evening.  The WEC classes would race on Friday from 4pm to 12 midnight, or 1000 miles.  A long and fun day for any sports car fan.

Friday was another beautiful day with WeatherTech class qualifications beginning at 9:55am.  After, I attended the autograph sessions and spent my time there with the visiting WEC teams.  You will see the LMP class-winning #8 Gazoo Toyota racing team with Fernando Alonso and the GTE PRO Porsche teams for car #91 (class winner) and #92 and the winning GTE AM Dempsey team.  This was followed by the WEC grid walk prior to the WEC race. The WEC grid and pit area were located inside the long Sebring back straight, entering off of turn 16.  This was quite unique and required some serious braking during the race, into a 110-degree pit-in entrance left turn.

The WEC race was fantastic with the 36 or so entries providing extremely long stretches of green flag running in excellent racing conditions. There were 2 cautions in the first 6 hours that meant the race would not reach 1000 miles, so it became a timed 8-hour race.  An interesting note, when WEC has a ‘yellow flag’ it is basically a virtual safety car, which means every team must slow immediately to 80km/hour and proceed at that speed until the track goes green.   It’s almost like watching slow-motion racing and you will find a 41 second video to confound you and prove it.  Rain, hard rain, came in the last 20 minutes of the race with the winning LMP #8 Toyota taking an off-course excursion, among others.  The crucial move for the Porsche GTE PRO Team #91 (with Gimmi Bruni driving) came with 17 minutes left as they followed the BWM Team #81 into the pits, nose to tail, for rain tires, with the Porsche GT Team beating them out for the GTE PRO lead.  Porsche held that lead as the race was put under the safety car for the final 12 minutes remaining of the 8-hour timed race.  Another fantastic pair of wins for Porsche (GTE PRO and GTE AM) at Sebring.  The popular Jackie Chan DC racing team #37 won the LMP2 class.

Saturday’s 12 Hour Race day began drizzly and rainy. The usually packed grid walk was a bit subdued due to the weather. The race started under yellow as the teams came to grip with the wet track. Overall, it was another outstanding race with much drama.  For Porsche fans it was thrilling to watch the Porsche GT Teams led by Nick Tandy (who had qualified 8th in class in Porsche GTLM #911) work their way forward after being a lap down in the first hour, to take the fight to the entire GTLM class and for Nick to take the lead from Ryan Briscoe in the #67 Ford GT in the final hour and hold it to the checkered flag.  Given the weather, I was content to dash between the PCA tent and our Gurney Terrace seat (with live video feed), so there are not any pictures taken from around the track during the race on Saturday.  Regardless, you can check out the 12 Hour race highlights at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AC1x0Y1FTec to get a feel for the on-track excitement around all of Sebring’s 17 turns.

Among the photos, you will see the PCA Porscheplatz Car Corral and hospitality area off Turn 17.  A typically great turnout there.  It was great seeing folks from SPC and the other regions.  It was a very popular place early in the race before the rain subsided a bit, and actually throughout the race.  Porsche also had a high-priced hospitality area in the elevated terrace area above the front stretch pits at the Turn 17 end of the Club Sebring building.  My friends and I had Gurney Terrace tickets and many of my pictures and videos were taken from there.  Gurney terrace is located near Turn 1, at the opposite end from Porsche Corporate hospitality.  Thus, I was able to wander down to the opposite end of the terrace and see how the well connected Porsche customers were enjoying the race.  Not too shabby a setup for sure!  You will also see a couple of pictures of the driver introductions on Saturday where every driver pretty much had to leave their umbrella behind and face the falling rain to be introduced to the crowd.

On Friday evening IMSA Radio kept everyone abreast of the pending space coast rocket launch from KSC, which we could actually see from the track. There is a short 25 second video of the rocket rising upward between turns 1 and 2 over the Sebring front straight walkover bridge.

All in all, it was an action-packed international sports car racing fans dream weekend.  Counting the support races we took in 24 hours of exceptional racing, watching the greatest sport car drivers in the world duel in two fantastic endurance races.  Some drivers actually participated in both the WEC 1000 Miles and the 12 Hours of Sebring.   I hear they are talking of doing it again next year.   Super Sebring 2020 indeed!
